Shinnyo-en is an international Buddhist community originally established in Japan in 1936 by Master Shinjo Ito. Shinnyo Buddhists promote the values of peaceful coexistence and cooperation through the works of philanthropic foundations, and place great value on the contributions that each individual can make toward life on our planet. Everyone;s spiritual journey is unique, and Shinnyo-en offers a diverse environment where all can grow and cultivate their aspiration for awakening. Shinnyo-en Sri Lanka has been contributing to Sri Lankan society for over three decades in a number of areas, such as social, cultural, religious, disaster and education.

The Friendly relationship with Shinnyo-en Japan Temple and Sri Lanka start in 1986 receiving a Sacred sapling of the Bhodhi Tree Most ven. Palipana Dharmakirthi Sri Gunaratana Chandananda Mahanayake Thero former Asgiriya Chapter – Sri Lanka.
The first philanthropic activity from shinnyoen outside Japan was the Shinnyoen Lanka Free nursery school, a state of the art nursery school gifted to Sri Lanka for providing of free nursery education for past 35 years since 1988 has provided free education for more than 8000 students so far.

Early 2013 Sri Lanka Amarapura , Ramanya Sects Mahanayake Visits Shinnyo-en Japan. In Aug Head of Shinnyo-en, Her holiness Shinso Ito visited Sri Lanka for the first times. Her holiness visited sacred sites of Sri Lanka including Anuradhapura and Kandy. An honorary title was awarded to her holiness Shinso Ito from the Asgiriya chapter.

On April 6th, Her Holiness Shinso Ito’s lifelong commitment as a Buddhist leader was recognized when an honorary Doctor of Philosophy from Buddhist and Pali University of Sri Lanka was conferred at the institution's 22nd General Convocation.
